Edgewood ISD dedicated a campus building after former Superintendent Dr. James “Jimmy” Vasquez.
The ceremony, held at John F. Kennedy High School and the location of the dedicated building, featured many student performances. EISD Superintendent Dr. Hernández and Henry Cisneros remarked on the lasting legacy of Dr. Vasquez.
Dr. Vasquez closed out the ceremony with a special thank you. “I know I have former students here and I promised my wife that I wouldn’t call you ‘kids’ but you will always be my ‘kids’, my students. You all stood by me when things got hard. That day when we took a stand against Texas Public Education, we stood proud and I hold that very close to my heart.”
Dr. Vasquez was the superintendent of EISD in 1978 and served through 1991. He was a pioneer and leader for equalized school funding in the landmark Edgewood vs. Kirby case. The renaming of the building is in recognition of his lifetime dedicated to public education.
Jimmy Vasquez building dedication today @ Kennedy was a great honor. Mr. Vasquez was a superintendent for Edgewood District and a principal here at Kennedy.
