Host, Deborah Duncan, helps shine a spotlight on outstanding programs, students, and teachers throughout the Houston-area Independent School Districts.

GO PUBLIC GULF COAST INTRO

Go Public Gulf Coast President, Bob Covey, and Needville ISD Board President, Chris Janicek, introduce the community to Go Public Gulf Coast and explain how much our traditional public school districts have evolved and improved over the years.  Public schools offer countless programs and opportunities to children that were not available a generation ago. Parents are encouraged to talk with their children and find out more about the exciting things that are happening in schools today.

FT. BEND & FRIENDSWOOD ISDs

Fort Bend middle school teacher, Shaughn Thomas, discusses his project-based approach to teaching financial literacy.  His students open bank accounts, invest in the stock market, and help teach adults financial responsibility. Hightower High school student Christian Slater talks about his own clothing line. Friendswood Junior High science teacher Misty Yarotsky introduces the way students are helping to solve global problems and her inspiration to become a teacher.  Friendswood High School freshman, Ganesh Venu, challenged himself to help solve the global water deficiency by studying potassium and rice- growing. He will present his project to scientists and legislators in hopes of receiving support to try his experiment on a large scale.

ALVIN AND SANTA FE ISDs

Renae Rives of Alvin ISD is joined by student Madelyn Marquez to discuss how the community came together to help one another in the aftermath of hurricane Harvey.  Santa Fe High School Principal Rachel Harris speaks of community support after the tragic shooting on campus. These educational advocates touch on the importance of the many unique programs offered in the Alvin and Friendswood public schools.

HUMBLE AND ALIEF ISDs

Humble ISD Superintendent, Dr. Elizabeth Fagen, explains how Humble teachers and schools focus on authentic connected learning in order for students to engage in hands-on lessons and more easily retain information.

Alief Veterinary Science teacher, Phyllis Sams, touches on the Alief Center for Advanced Careers, which allows students to become certified in high school so that they have a job immediately after graduation.  Alief students can gain real-life experience in careers like veterinary sciences and many more CTE subjects.

ANGLETON, COLUMBIA-BRAZORIA & BRAZOSPORT

Superintendent Phil Edwards from Angleton ISD and Dr. Millicent Valek, Brazosport College President, discuss the Catalyst program that is offered to area students.  Brazosport College works with local public school districts to allow students the opportunity to acquire an associates degree within one year of high school graduation and with no debt. Brazoswood High School and Columbia High School students join the discussion and describe their appreciation and excitement for these hands-on courses at local plants, where they hope to start a life-long career.

HUFFMAN ISD

Huffman ISD Athletic Director and 2015 “Life-Changer of the Year” Mike McEachern talks about how athletics is important in keeping kids involved in the community in order to succeed.  One high school football player explains how sports teaches lessons in adversity, grit, overcoming obstacles, and time- management. Huffman high school athletes spend time visiting elementary school students to read to them, help with homework, and act as role models and mentors.
