Cypress-Fairbanks ISD alumnus and NBA star De’Aaron Fox returned to his former campus Cypress Lake High to deliver a special surprise to the boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams.
Fox, a 2016 graduate and standout player for the Sacramento Kings, presented the athletes with a customized version of his new Under Armour Curry Brand sneaker, the Fox 1. The exclusive shoes, designed in Cypress Lakes’ red and gray colors, also featured the school’s logo on the back. In addition to unveiling the shoes, Fox autographed a pair for each player, creating a memorable experience for the students.
“These are shoes that are not coming out, not being sold anywhere. This is just for you,” Fox told the players during the surprise visit. The NBA star’s connection to his community and humble demeanor impressed Curry Brand leadership, who saw Fox as a perfect fit for their mission of “Change the Game for Good.” Nana Dadzie, Curry Brand’s director of marketing, explained how Fox’s character mirrors that of Stephen Curry’s, noting, “Not just the athlete but the human being. That’s why he was our number one target.”
The Fox 1 marks Fox as the first NBA player to sign with Curry Brand, a milestone that resonated with Cypress Lakes and CFISD officials. “De’Aaron stayed local to his community…that makes him elite in this space,” said Charles Ament, CFISD associate athletic director. The first public release of Fox’s shoe will debut with a holiday-themed colorway, “Happy Fox Day,” on Dec. 6, followed by other designs, including a Kings-inspired version called “Light the Beam.” The custom shoes given to Cypress Lakes athletes, however, remain one-of-a-kind, reinforcing Fox’s deep ties to his hometown.
