Children’s Book Week is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country. Annual events are held nationwide at schools, libraries, and bookstores.
Children’s Books in School Libraries
We are spotlighting some of our outstanding public school libraries and librarians during Children’s Book Week. Check out how a few of our Go Public librarians help connect students with the books and authors they love!
CAROLINE WILLIAMS, Library Information Specialist
When Alief ISD gave money to schools for a virtual after-school program, this Library Information Specialist created a virtual book club. A. J. Bush Elementary students meet weekly to read books, create book trailers, compete in challenges, and share book reviews.

Harlandale ISD’s Gillette Elementary students participated in a March Book Madness tournament. Students voted for their favorites in each bracket and found out at the end which book was enjoyed the most!

Alamo Heights ISD students participated in World Read Aloud Day. Woodridge Elementary students attended virtual and in-person author visits to listen to books in the author’s voice. Teachers and staff also read their favorite books aloud!

All reading classes at Riverwood Middle School in Humble ISD experienced a virtual book tasting. Students viewed 6 rounds of 6 books with book trailers and summaries. After each round, the student would record the book they liked best, and at the end, they had 6 books they were excited to read.

Lieder Elementary School’s librarian gave their library program a huge revamp to get kids excited about coming to the library again. The Cypress- Fairbanks ISD librarian regularly dresses up and plans fun events, making this library #thehappiestlibraryonearth!

Fall Creek Elementary School’s library in Humble ISD supports information fluency by meaningfully connecting print texts with digital literacy and collaborative Makerspace time. Currently, students are reading excerpts from a Texas Bluebonnet Award Nominee, Follow Those Zebras, then investigating African animals such as zebras using Augmented Reality tools.

The Judson ISD Library Services Department is bringing the district community together through shared reading experiences. They kicked off the first year of JISD Reads Together featuring Pablo Cartaya’s The Epic Fail of Arturo Zamora.
