Public Schools Provide Safe School Bus Transport

A yellow school bus is one of the most familiar symbols of a school community.  America’s daily fleet of nearly 480,000 school buses transports a third of our students safely to and from school. This giant bus fleet is more than twice the size of all forms of mass transit combined. That includes air, bus, and rail transport (Bellwether ). It is also the safest of all modes of transport for children (NHTSA- School Bus Safety).

How to Find a Bus Stop Near Me

Are you looking for your bus stops or your bus route?

Parents can use a school bus route finder or a school district bus stop finder. Download a GPS tracking app like Safestop, Here Comes the Bus, or Where’s The Bus?  The apps follow the real-time movement of the bus and provide accurate arrival times and emergency delay information.

School districts also provide their specific bus routes, bus stop locations, and bus schedules on the district websites.  Find your district to learn more!

Bus Safety

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, children are most likely to arrive safely at school via bus versus other transportation means. This is because the buses are the most regulated vehicles in the country.  They are designed to be safer than other carriers due to the bright yellow paint, flashing red lights, and movable stop sign arms.  These properties make buses highly visible to other drivers, even in the dark.  They are constructed with protective seating to absorb collision impact.  Additionally, they are built with reliable rollover safeguards. Driving laws also help protect children. They restrict vehicles from passing school buses while students are dropped off and picked up.

How are school buses used?

Public school districts offer transportation to children enrolled in neighborhood schools, magnet schools, and specialty academies.  Public school buses are equipped with GPS, allowing school staff and parents to track the location and speed of the bus.

Buses are also widely used for students during field trips, sporting event transportation, and special event transit.

Do charter schools have buses?

When choosing a school, many parents ask, “Do charter schools have buses?” While some charter schools may offer transportation, it is not mandated. Some private schools may provide transportation through donations and tuition funds, but it is not required.  A school choice article from The Brookings Institution comments, “A family can’t choose a school if their children can’t get there.”  Therefore, transportation offered by a school is often a critical part of the decision-making process.
