How to Register for School in San Antonio
When is School Registration?
Many public school districts begin registration for the fall school year in the spring, and sometimes as early as February. But don’t worry- school districts often have a late enrollment period for those who missed the early enrollment dates.
When do Kids Start Kindergarten?
Texas law states that if a child turns five prior to September 1 in a given school year, the child is eligible to begin kindergarten that year. Before that, children as young as 3 can enter pre-k or preschool to help them prepare for kindergarten and elementary school.
Other than age requirements, a child is usually ready for kindergarten if:
- They are able to sit and listen to a story.
- They are able to take direction from an adult other than their parents.
- They are able to ask for help.

What You Need to Enroll in Public Schools
- Immunization records
- Proof of residence
- Birth certificate
- Parent ID
What Qualifies as Proof of Residence
It is extremely important to validate your residential address. The address used for enrollment cannot be a temporary home or an address where you own property. You cannot use the address of a friend, family member, or your previous home. You and your child must currently live in the home. This ensures that as school districts change and grow, the district taxpayers are funding the education of the students within that district.
Proof of residence can be:
- A copy of a current utility bill (gas, electric, water)
- A current lease
- A copy of closing papers on a newly purchased home
