Districts Observe the Importance of National School Breakfast Week
National School Breakfast Week reminds us of the value of nutritious school breakfasts.
The federal School Breakfast Program provides low-income children with a healthy morning meal every school day.
During School Breakfast Week, school nutrition staff create special breakfast menu items and fun activities for all students.
Why is School Breakfast Important?
School breakfasts lead to better academic success. Food security provides equity to students. Hunger can cause children to have a more difficult time focusing on learning, managing behavior and emotions, or maintaining positive relationships with their teachers and peers.
Are School Breakfasts Nutritious?
YES! The USDA- Nutrition Standards require school nutrition directors to serve certain menu items at each meal while encouraging the use of domestically produced foods.
Requirements for school breakfast for K-12 students include:
Grains: Two servings of whole grains
Milk: One cup of either fat-free or 1% white milk or fat-free flavored milk
Fruit: One cup of fruit (or vegetables)
