South San Antonio ISD celebrates the opening of their new sustainable community garden.
The students of Madla Elementary held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the new sustainable community garden. Volunteers from Gardopia Gardens, Wells Fargo, and Trinity University also were in attendance.
The project all started when Madla Elementary fifth grade teacher, Priscilla Navarijo, contacted the Wells Fargo Impact Team. Together, they were able to collaborate with Gardopia Gardens and receive a $20,000 grant to fund the project.
“This project will not only enhance the learning experience of our students but also educate them on the importance of environmental conservation,” Navarijo continued “Students will have numerous opportunities for hands-on learning, including planting and maintaining the garden, which will help build teamwork and problem solving skills.”
With the opening of the new community garden, Madla Elementary hopes to help students get new experiences, build relationships and trust, as well as gain knowledge of sustainability that can be carried on outside of the classroom and into their futures.
