CTE Month and the Culinary Arts Pathway
CTE, or Career and Technical Education, includes public school districts’ Culinary Arts programs. Culinary Arts is part of the CTE Hospitality and Tourism Career Cluster.
What is Culinary Arts?
Culinary Arts refers to planning, preparing, cooking, presenting, and serving food.
Culinary Arts students learn skills that focus on time management, communication, and customer service. Students can also explore the history of the hospitality industry while learning the introduction to food and beverage basics.
High School CTE Culinary Arts Programs
Because public high school students have diverse interests, our school districts provide many opportunities to prepare them for a variety of careers, like the culinary field. Also, high school students may earn college credit and/or industry certification before they graduate.
High school culinary arts programs teach several basic skills:
- Ingredient Preparation
- Food Pairing
- Dish Plating
- Kitchen Management
- Food Science
- Customer Service
Culinary programs offer training to earn a culinary certificate while in high school. Culinary industry certifications include:
- ManageFirst Professional
- ServeSafe Manager
- Certified Fundamentals Pastry Cook
- Certified Fundamentals Cook
