Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD shares the importance of teaching students financial literacy.
The Ready, Set, Teach! (RST) program is a field-based internship which supplies students with the knowledge of child and adolescents development principles, along with effective teaching principles. With the help of SCUC partner, Junior Achievement of South Texas (JAST), they are dedicated to teaching students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. However, it is still a work in progress.
Wendy Frisbey, Family & Consumer Science teacher at Clemens HS and overseer of the RST program expresses, “It’s really cool for (RST students) to get the experience of coming into a classroom, working with the teacher, and experiencing the whole thing on their own.”
Shelia Aldana, who is a program manager for the Junior Achievement of South Texas (JAST) states, “We feel like it’s not only going to teach the elementary students some things about financial literacy and work/career readiness, but it’s going to give high school students an opportunity as well.” Aldana also adds, “It opens their eyes and minds to education as something they want to go into.”
Hayley Menjares is one of the students in the RST program at Clemens HS. Menjares states that she originally wanted to become a pediatrician, but after joining RST, she “. . . started to see how I could help kids learn and grow.” She adds, “Teaching isn’t for everybody. These courses are offered so you can try it out. You can see if you do or don’t like it. In this case, I really liked it.”
Menjares is dedicated to helping close this gap between the two worlds. She states, “Here I am now on a teacher route, if there are programs open to schools like this, they need to definitely try them out. This is a good path for me.”
