Alamo Heights ISD welcomed the Southwest Foodservice Excellence (SFE) at the Howard Early Childhood Center! Mrs. Gonzales’ class learned about healthy eating, fresh ingredients, and had a cooking demonstration with Chef David from our partners at SFE as part of the “Roving Chef” program. The SFE is passionate about providing K-12 students with the best meals through revolutionary changes made to school-based nutrition. This culinary-based food service prides itself on fresh-from-scratch meals and menu variety.
The SFE offers various nutrition education support programs such as all-family, community Thanksgiving meals, Health Fairs, onsite “School Gardens and Composting” programs, and “Roving Chef”. The “Roving Chef” program is an interactive cooking experience where a certified chef teaches students how to cook healthy meals made from scratch. At Howard ECC, chicken teriyaki and fresh veggies were on the menu and students selected their ingredients to make personalized stir-fry bowls! Through this program, SFE hopes students will explore new foods, develop skills for independence, and promote lifelong healthy lifestyles.
