Azle ISD students from the district’s special education Transition Center visited Silver Creek Elementary for a Pre-K Pet Adoption Day! The young professionals focused on practicing math, communication, and CTE customer service skills while selling products for pet rocks — including blankets, beds, collars, leashes, toys, and even pet rock care handbooks!
A mutually beneficial experience for everyone involved, this opportunity helped to solidify real-world skills for all ages while having fun — for both the Pre-K and Transition Center kids! About the event, one parent on Facebook said her “daughter is a preK Silver Creek student and this was absolutely the highlight of her day! She was so excited to tell me about her new pet rock when she got home. Thank you guys so much for providing this fun experience for her and her peers!”
The Azle ISD Transition Center Team helps develop goals for after high school. They assist young minds in creating visions for where students want to be in terms of living, employment, or post-secondary school options and determining and designing programs, services, and opportunities to help them get there. Recently, they were awarded a grant through the Azle Education Foundation which will be used to purchase life skills and vocational simulations for our students. These simulations replicate real-life environments, allowing students to practice in a safe space before engaging hands-on in the community. This will improve skill generalization, social interactions, and independence, while reinforcing essential life skills like budgeting, cooking, and safety awareness — allowing for more events like the Pet Adoption Day!
