Boerne ISD Disabled Pre-K Student Learns to Use Her Feet as Tools

4-year-old Rilyn Gonzalez of Van Raub Elementary School overcomes physical challenges with a smile.

She was born missing muscles in her upper body. The disability affects her whole body, and she is unable to use her arms or hands. Along with her teaching assistant and biggest cheerleader, Heidi, Rilyn has made huge progress toward learning how to use her feet as tools. She also took her first step this year!

Boerne ISD schools are dedicated to helping all students with disabilities to overcome obstacles with the goal of self-sufficiency. Rilyn is a shining example of perseverance and how much you can overcome with a positive attitude.

Boerne Independent School District is one of only three districts across Texas to be selected as a finalist for the H-E-B Excellence in Education Award.  The district will compete for $50,000 to go towards student learning.

“We were very excited to hear of the honor,” said Superintendent for Boerne ISD Dr. Thomas Price. “We have innovative teaching styles in our district such as a focus on collaborative, action-based, and social-emotional learning that we are proud is being noticed.”

The H-E-B Excellence in Education Award celebrates school districts with innovative programs, high parent and community involvement, and availability of professional development opportunities for teachers and administrators.

Boerne ISD Introduces Digital Learning Tools

Boerne ISD’s Digital Learning team recently introduced SMART Suite Resources technology into some of the District’s campuses. The SMART boards serve as whiteboards with the added function of allowing teachers to make lessons more engaging, reinforcing, and collaborative in areas of reading, online videos, activities, and games. SMART board technology works with Google classroom and other SMART Resources to enable teachers to easily use and share with their students and colleagues.

One SMART board user, third-grade teacher Stephanie Edmondson, at Herff Elementary, enjoys working the SMART resources. “What makes this technology so great,” said Mrs. Edmondson, “is that the kids have the freedom to work on the lesson at their own pace and even revisit topics where they have a special interest. Then, when I want to pull the class back together, I’ll ask them some questions and have them use ‘shout it out’ to send in their answers – they enter their answers right there on their Chromebooks, and they display anonymously on the SMART Board.” The “shout it out” feature can help increase participation from students who might be intimidated by providing answers in front of the class.

Boerne ISD is excited to continue working with the SMART technology tools to make learning exciting and meaningful for their students.
